Linguistic revival

A foreign language is much more than just new words. We also need to learn in which cases to use certain words, what should be highlighted, in what rhythm to speak, etc. All this is called the structure of the language. Professor Tomatis Also developed a method that helps to master the structure of the language much faster.

Above we have already spoken about the expression “mother tongue”, emphasizing the importance of the word “language”. It has long been known that the structure of our native language is laid in us in the womb of the mother – during the last five months we hear her voice. Although the child in utero hears the voice of his mother is somewhat different than in reality. The thing is that the mother’s voice passes to the child through the amniotic fluid, which play the role of a sound filter. This filter allows to pass only high frequency sounds – more than 8 thousand Hz., which form in us the very structure of the “native language”.

Using the Tomatis method, we can model this process: You listen to the text in a foreign language, passed through the 8000-Hertz filter. As a result, You hear a text that mimics what You would hear in utero. After a few hours of listening gradually added tones of lower frequencies, so there is a “birth” of a new language, in the future You will perceive it as inherent in You in utero.

After that comes a new stage in learning – the repetition of words and then sentences for the teacher. Next, You will learn to control your pronunciation and intonation. How best to manage your voice is the subject of discussion in the next Chapter.

Leading ear
We all know that there are people with the dominant right hand and there are people with the left hand. But few know that we all also have a dominant ear. Some of us hear mainly with the right ear, others with the left ear. Professor Tomatis found that they perceive information better, “right-eared”ones are better adapted. It is especially preferable to have a right dominant ear if You want to learn foreign languages. The fact that the right ear is associated with the left hemisphere of the brain, where the center of speech, language skills. If you listen more with your left ear, the information first goes to the right hemisphere, and then to the left hemisphere, which requires much more time. In addition, having passed such a complex route, the sounds are slightly distorted, especially the sounds of high frequency. The Tomatis method allows anyone to make the right ear dominant. This is as follows: during the initial stage of training, when You just listen to music, the device “electronic ear” makes Your right ear work more intensively. Then, when You repeat the words and sentences behind the teacher, through the same apparatus You hear your voice more with your right ear. A feedback loop is created, through which You learn to control your voice. Gradually and without impact, You begin to hear the right ear, i.e. it becomes dominant.

Experiment kumen: proof
In 1976, the Effectiveness of the Tomatis Method was tested at a school in Kumen, Belgium. For the study was taken 30 high school students, they were divided into 2 groups. All students had approximately the same level of “listening” ability, which was determined by means of audiometry. They all spoke French and none of them knew English. The first group was taught English in the normal high school program during the full school year. Another group was enrolled in the regular high school program for 6 months and at the same time by the method of Tomatis for 3 months. At the end of the school year, all students were tested by an independent teacher for understanding spoken English, as well as pronunciation. The group, which was engaged in the method of Tomatis, clearly won against the background of the group, which mastered the language in the usual school program. After school holidays, these two groups were tested again and this difference became even more obvious. The Tomatis Group retained the knowledge it had acquired during the school year, while the regular group had forgotten much of what it had learned. The results of this study prove the correctness of the Tomatis method. Since then, many people around the world have benefited from the foreign language teaching method developed by Tomatis.

An unexpected discovery for the subjects themselves was that 83% felt that it became easier for them to communicate with other people, this improved their professional qualities, there was a motivation to work more and better.

In our world today, knowledge of a foreign language gives you a significant advantage over your competitors. And, of course, the method of Tomatis can be used by anyone who wants to fully enjoy the pleasure of communication, traveling to other countries.
